Posted on by Jamie Tomassetti

As this material quickly gains popularity in both the commercial and residential markets, we thought now would be the perfect time to share these five points on thin porcelain.

1. Size

Characterized by its minimal thickness of anywhere between 3 to 6 mm and large slab dimensions (up to 5’ x 10’), just a few pieces of thin porcelain can be used to cover an entire area such as a shower. Being lightweight and slim, it can also be installed in a space that may not be structurally sound to support the weight of a heavy natural stone like granite.

2. Applications

Thin porcelain has opened the doors to creativity in the design world. It can be used for a range of applications, including walls, columns, ventilated building facades, and sinks. In countertop applications, thin porcelain slabs installed with a built up mitered edge will lend an exquisite look of thick stone. The material can also be used to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor environments in a clean and polished fashion.

3. Options

Offered in a full spectrum of stone, wood, and other artistic looks, the choices are becoming limitless in the thin porcelain arena. Both polished and matte finishes are also now available, allowing for an ultimate level of flexibility. A mix of polished walls with a non-slippery matte floor equate to a classy yet safe shower design.

4. Price

The price of thin porcelain is competitively priced compared to its natural stone counterparts like Statuario, Onyx, Calacatta Gold, and other exotic materials. And, while pricing may be similar to high-end marbles and exotic stones, thin porcelain replicates the look of these materials in a very high-performing way.

5. Project Saver

Thin porcelain can typically be applied to stable, pre-existing surfaces. A clean and efficient installation v.s. a messy and expensive gut remodel … no need to say anymore!
